Welcome Students, Parents and Guardians,
At St Scholastica’s we aim to make the transition from junior school to senior school as smooth as possible. We understand that this is a time that presents challenges and a great deal of thinking regarding the future. There are important decisions and choices to be made and we know that this is not as simple as it may seem. What we do know, is that this is an exciting time for you and we are here to help you make the right decisions.
At St Scholastica's College we offer a large range of subjects to allow you to make strategic choices regarding your future. An important decision to make is whether or not you want an ATAR. An ATAR will allow you to apply for University directly after your HSC year. If you choose a non ATAR path then you will receive your HSC but not an ATAR. Whichever you choose the career paths for either are wide and varied.
There are two decisions that have been made for you and that is that every student must study English and Religion. English is the only subject mandated by NESA. Being a Catholic College, we advocate that you choose either Studies of Religion 1 or 2 unit or Studies in Catholic Thought which is a one unit course. From this point on, you can then begin to choose subjects that align with your future intentions or subjects that you are interested in. What is vitally important here, is that you choose according to your own needs, interests and abilities because this generally determines your final outcome.
For the Year 11 course, you must choose at least 12 units. Most students choose 13 units as it allows for some flexibility in making future choices. Each subject has created an informative video explaining the subject and its demands.
We understand the importance of this time and encourage you to start thinking about your pattern of study. It is important that you speak with your family, teachers, Heads of Department and the Careers Counsellor to really think through your choices. We are here to support you and guide you. The better the decision-making the less chance there is that you will need to change subjects at the beginning of the year and lose valuable time in your learning.
